Muslim woman’s body desecrated in morgue

London – British police said on Friday they had launched an investigation after a Muslim woman’s dead body was desecrated in a London hospital.
Family of the 65-year-old woman discovered that rashers of bacon had been placed on her body while it was in the mortuary of Hillingdon Hospital, in north-west London.
It is strictly against the Muslim religion to touch or eat pork.
“This is a particularly grotesque act which has outraged the family as well as the whole community,” Detective Chief Inspector Tony Hester said, adding the matter was being treated as a racially motivated crime.
Police, who along with the hospital are offering a £5 000 (about R65 000) reward for help in catching those responsible, said the incident had occurred in January.
The woman had died of cancer and the hospital had arranged for her family to view her corpse the following day, when the bacon was discovered.
“It is sickening to see the body desecrated in this manner,” Inayat Bunglawala, of the Muslim Council of Britain, told Britain’s Guardian newspaper.
“The fact bacon was put there, which Muslims regard as unclean, is very deliberate and designed to hurt the grieving family.”
