Rejecting her plea to stay in Cincinnati and noting her continued denial that she drowned her two children, a judge Thursday sent Bridgett Stovall to a maximum-security mental institution in Columbus.
“She committed a horrible crime, that is the deliberate killing of her two helpless children,” Cartolano said. “She did this because of some third party by voodoo or a hex.”
Prosecutors initially sought the death penalty against Stovall, 24, after she was indicted for murder in the April 7, 2001, drowning deaths of her daughter Cariyan, 4, and son Iyan, 18 months.
She believed a neighbor in her Evanston apartment building placed a voodoo spell on her.
On the advice of her mother, she began reading the Bible to the children and then, to exorcise the demons from them, gave them a bath in salt water.
She then drowned them as the police were trying to break into her apartment.
She was found not guilty by reason of insanity July 29 before a three-judge panel.
