Radio Australia News, Mar. 21, 2003

A Chinese court has sentenced an American member of the banned Falun Gong sect to three years’ jail.

Charles Lee, also known by his Chinese name Li Xiangqun, was arrested in in Guangzhou city in January on suspicion of sabotaging television and radio networks.

He was sentenced recently in Yangzhou Intermediate People’s Court.

The Xinhua news agency says Lee will be expelled from China once he has served his sentence.

China claims members of the Falun Gong, which was banned in 1999 as an “evil sect”, have been repeatedly hijacking television networks to air broadcasts that advocate the group’s virtues.
