North Miami Beach police: Ex-cult member’s son shot at teens
A former Yahweh ben Yahweh cult member’s son is charged with aggravated assault after police say he fired at two teens who boarded the mens’ canal-docked yacht.
Former Yahweh ben Yahweh cult member Maurice Woodside and his son shot at two partying teens who climbed onto a yacht docked behind their North Miami Beach house, police said Friday.
Woodside, a controversial conservative crusader who calls himself “Michael the Black Man,” was not charged. Police charged his son, Jeremiah Parham, 22, with aggravated assault with a firearm after they said he sprayed the teens with an AK-47 rifle.
The two teens, who police say swam through a canal, scrambled up the house dock and boarded Woodside’s boat, were not hurt. They were charged with burglary for entering the yacht.
The bizarre episode adds another chapter to the colorful life of Woodside, who was acquitted in the 1992 federal murder conspiracy trial of the notorious Miami Yahweh cult members.
Parham remained jailed on Friday night. Woodside could not be reached for comment.
[...]Woodside — formerly known as Mikael Israel — was a former disciple of ben Yahweh, the black supremacist cult leader who was indicted federally in the early ’90s for a string of murders.
Jurors in 1992 convicted ben Yahweh of conspiracy to commit murder, but Woodside was acquitted. He later became a rabid anti-Democrat and adopted his Michael the Black Man nickname.
According to a 2008 profile in the Miami New Times, he claimed to earn a living as a club promoter and yacht refurbisher. His website — michaeldefeatssatan.com — features videos of him preaching.
In 2008, the Secret Service kicked Woodside and a group of followers out of the BankUnited Center after they interrupted a Barack Obama rally. Video of the scene was broadcast on cable news outlets.
