Uganda leader of ‘Abengiri cult’ arrested
Police in Uganda are investigating a cult that has been operating in the Hoima District, the country’s Daily Monitor says.
Police started the investigations following reports that the leader of the ‘Abengiri cult’ discourages its followers from taking their children to school, immunising them and using toilets.
Members of the cult reportedly do not seek medical attention when they are sick but use herbs instead.
Its leader, Pastor Moses Massa, was arrested last Wednesday.
According to Pastor Massa, the church has branches in Kiboga, Kampala and in Kibaale districts. He said the followers pray every Saturday.
Ms Zurah Ganyana, spokesperson for the regional police force, told the paper followers of the sect do not eat pork, ducks and fish without scales.
Pastor Massa, interviewed at the Hoima police station, told the Daily Monitor his church — whose followers pray on Saturdays — is headquartered in Jerusalem, with branches in Uganda’s Kiboga, Kampala and in Kibaale districts.
Massa was arrested on suspicion of having sabotages government immunization and schooling programs.
