Members of the outlawed Mungiki sect are required to surrender to the nearest police station or Provincial Administration officials.
The Minister of State in charge of Provincial Administration and Internal security, Dr Chris Murungaru said yesterday the sect members wishing to surrender should report to the DCs’, DOs’ or Chiefs’ offices and after which they will be allowed to reunite with their families.
In a Press statement, Dr Murungaru said his January 11 amnesty will remain in force for 30 days and asked members of the sect who have not taken advantage of the amnesty to do so.
”So far a number of the sect members have surrendered and are now free to lead normal life,” said the Minister.
Meanwhile, Murungaru yesterday visited Nakuru District following the recent skirmishes in Molo area.
Dr Murungaru vowed that the police will continue to pursue those who are still involved in the promotion of the activities of the sect. He said the Government would not rest until the members of the sect are wiped out from the streets and villages.
In a related, development former Nakuru Town Member of Parliament, David Njuki Manyara who is facing murder charges was yesterday remanded in custody as committal bundles to prosecute him were not ready.
Dressed in a grey suit, the former legislator was escorted to the court room under tight security by police officers. He was immediately whisked away after the case was mentioned.
Nakuru Chief Magistrate, Gladys Ndeda remanded the legislator and his nine co-accused until the matter is mentioned on February 6.
The court room was packed to capacity that even the legislator’s wife and relatives were forced to wait outside.
The prosecution conducted by Chief Inspector, Samson Kiptum informed the court that the legislator’s committal bundles were still held up at the Officer Commanding Police Station typing pool and requested for more time for the completion of the typing.
However Manyara’s lawyer, Mr Karanya Mbugua said that it should not be a tradition for the prosecution to deny the defence information about progress made concerning cases. He urged the court to ensure that his client be informed of progress made to avail the bundles.
Manyara is alleged to have murdered Boniface Shebasinya, John Kamatu, Joash Ambani, Jackson Bunnet, Bernard Kihika and David Nyandere on the night of January 5 this year within Nakuru Town.
