Imam’s daughter under police protection
The daughter of a British imam is under police protection after her family threatened to kill her for converting to Christianity.
The 32-year-old woman became a Christian 15 years ago after she ran away to escape an arranged marriage.
Since then she has been forced to move house 45 times to avoid being tracked down by her family, who are demanding – on pain of death – that she return to Islam.
The woman spoke out on the eve of the launch of Lapido Media, a new charity which is seeking to improve the national discourse about faith.
She told The Times: “I know the Koran says that anyone who goes away from Islam should be killed as an apostate so in some ways my family are following the Koran.
‘They are following Islam to the word. But I do not think every Muslim would actually act on that.”
