Court Blocks Mary Winkler’s Visit With Children

JACKSON, Tenn. — An appeals court Friday blocked a supervised visit between Mary Winkler and her children scheduled for Saturday.

The court issued a stay after a last-minute application from the children’s paternal grandparents, who have had temporary custody of the three young girls since Winkler went to jail in the shooting death of her minister husband.

Mary Winkler’s attorney said the stay is only temporary pending an investigation of Dan and Diane Winkler’s accusations that the judge who originally granted the visit ruled erroneously.

Winkler was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in April for shooting husband Matthew Winkler, a Church of Christ minister, at their residence in Selmer, Tennessee, in March 2006.

Winkler drew a three-year prison sentence and got probation for most of it, spending just over five months in jail and two months in a mental health facility.

The girls are now 10, 8 and 2 years old.
