Richard Roberts to address suit on Larry King
Oral Roberts University president Richard Roberts will appear on CNN’s Larry King Live tonight in his first public interview since the university was accused of violating the school’s tax-exempt status by donating resources to a political campaign.
Roberts, the son of televangelist Oral Roberts, announced the television appearance today in an e-mail addressed to university alumni.
“Up until now we were advised not to speak out on these allegations from a recent lawsuit filed against Oral Roberts University,” the statement reads. “This interview will give us an opportunity to share our story with the nation.”
Although Roberts hasn’t responded publicly to the allegations, he addressed the lawsuit during a weekly chapel service last Wednesday, where he said the allegations were “about intimidation, blackmail and extortion.”
The lawsuit was filed last week by three former professors, a history department chairman, and a husband and wife who taught in the government department. The former professors claimed they were wrongly terminated for acting as whistle-blowers against the university.
In the lawsuit, they claim Roberts pressured professors to participate in political campaigns, using nonprofit resources for partisan politics in violation of federal tax laws.
The plaintiffs also claim they were forced out because they turned in a report which documented misuse of university funds by Roberts and his wife Lindsay over to the Board of Regents.
The program airs tonight at 8.
