Americans front with $250,000
The Americans who ran up close to half a million dollars of debt on Niue have come through with most of it according to Finance Minister Fisa Pihigai.
He says the group paid $250, 000 with the rest promised at a later date. But Pihigia was unable to say who paid the debt or where the money came from … only that $200,000 is still outstanding.
The group, believed to be the cult Maha Devi Ascencion Movement, have to remain on the island until they’ve paid their debt.
Fisa Pihigia threatened to send them to jail last week but opted instead to place the group under house arrest.
