Finance minister admist Niue soft on cult because it is desperate for cash
Auckland 8am: They’re believed to be from the cult the Maha Devi Ascension Movement and they’ve been on Niue for more than a year, holed up in the Matavai Resort, largely unseen by locals except a chosen few.
But while the islanders … and that includes key officials … have never sighted them, their bills have been pretty hard to miss.
They originally owed $450, 000, for food and their stay at Matavai Resortl, where they had taken the most expensive suites, but pressure has led to them coughing up $250,000.
Finance and Immigration Minister Fisa Pihigia admits they’re still taking a softly softly approach with the two American families, and that they’ve backed off from jailing them because of their “vulnerable state of minds.”
Pihigia tells the news editor of Pacific Radio News, Lito Vilisoni, here that while outsiders are astounded at the way they’ve let the group off so lightly, they have their reasons…
Pihigia says Niue needs investors, even those like this strange group, who’re bringing much-needed money to the island.
