Niue turns to NZ courts to recover money from Maha Devi Ascension Movement
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND —- Legal action is being taken by the Niue Government to recover more than NZD$400,000 (US$288,000) from a group living on the island for a year now without paying their bills.
Finance Minister Fisa Pihigia confirmed to Auckland radio station, Niu FM that his office was working with police to file a claim in the New Zealand courts against the group.
Mr Pihigia said the Maha Devi Ascension group owed more than NZD$350,000 (US$252,000) to the Matavai Resort and NZD$100,000 (US$72,000) to local businesses.
He said his office hopes to speak with a New Zealand judge this week to get some clarification on what they could do to ensure the group pay up.
