The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims [Supkem] yesterday said it does not support the activities of the Mungiki people.
The Supkem chairman, Prof Abdulghafur El-Busaidy, said the Islamic faith does not also support activities that are against the peaceful co-existence of Kenyans.
The Council said all Kenyans irrespective of their identity are welcome to the Islamic faith, but what Mungiki was reportedly doing, discounts them from being Muslims.
He was addressing journalists at the Supkem offices in Nairobi, where he said Muslims can never involve themselves in a holy war unless they are defending their religion against aggression.
“You can not be a Muslim, unless you subscribe and adhere to all rules that are stipulated in the Holy Quran, among them, ensuring that you are clean and clothing are always clean,” said El-Busaidy.
On Sunday, the outlawed sect boasted that, “it will meet fire with fire” and threatened to call a Jihad [Islamic holy war] against the Government, unless there is a let-up in the country-wide crackdown against the sect.
During its inception about three years ago, Mungiki sect leaders said they had merged with the Islamic Party of Kenya [IPK] which was at one time led by fiery Mombasa preacher Sheikh Khalid Balala.
