A man who claimed he set his estranged wife on fire because he thought she was a witch was found guilty today of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced to life in prison.
A jury took less than an hour to convict Keeper Ray Hudson, 47, this morning. After a lunch break the panel will hear testimony to decide how Hudson should be punished for the felony offense.
On the stand today Hudson testified his wife, Angela, didn’t deserve what had happened to her. But
said he felt he had to set her afire.
“In my mind she was a witch trying to destroy me and my children,” Hudson said. “I was going to destroy her before she could destroy me and my children. It’s as simple as that.”
After learning his wife did not want to reconcile and that another man fathered some of the five children Hudson thought were his, Hudson became enraged, defense lawyer Tyrone Moncriffe said.

Dressed in a royal blue three-piece suit with a polka dot tie, Hudson sat at the defense table, sometimes folding his hands in prayer and other times thumbing through a well-worn Bible.
Testimony in the punishment phase continues today.
