New Zealand city approves $160,000 loan for Subud religious conference
Christchurch City Council has voted to loan $160,000 interest-free to a charismatic spiritual group so members can bid for a world conference of the Subud faith in Christchurch.
The council officers recommended that councillors approve the loan, which would be repaid in 2010, because the event would bring thousands of people to Christchurch.
Subud Association members worship God through a form of Indonesian spiritual training, which includes speaking in tongues.
Mayor Garry Moore said today the group deserved to be supported in its bid for the Subud world conference, regardless of its religious practices.
The loan will go to the council’s own company, Vbase, to secure a booking of the Christchurch Convention Centre for the conference.
