In 1967 Nellie Lewis of Apaloosa, Colorado, discovered that her horse, Snippy, had been mutilated by space aliens. She said the horse gave off a sweet scent like incense, its mane burned her fingers and the boots she was wearing became radioactive.

Snippy was the first widely acclaimed animal to be desecrated by spacemen but she opened the floodgate to many more claims. By 1979 the FBI reported 8000 alien cattle and horse mutilations. A state governor claimed that cattle mutilation was “one of the greatest outrages in the history of the Western cattle industry”.

The mutilated animals often had eyes, udders, genitals, tongues, lips, soft organs or one ear removed; or hide and flesh removed from the jaw. Many had unusual medicinal or surgical odours, had cuts made by surgical instruments, with strange marks or “post holes”, and helicopter tyre treads on the ground around the mutilated animals. Surviving animals were often very restless and UFOs or unusual aircraft were often reported before or after the discovery of mutilated animals.

Many of the mutilations were reported near former US nuclear test sites.

Alien animal mutilations have taken on a life of their own. They feature in several arcade video games and TV dramas. In an episode of Invader Zim, Zim is seen pumping cattle full of sewage to taint the humans’ meat supply. Mutilated cow has become the name of a wrestling submission. Once the hold is locked in, the two wrestlers end up making the shape of a chopped-open cow.

Forty years on and Snippy has her own website including a Snippy store selling Snippy merchandise (www.snippy.com).

These mutilations were widely blamed on extraterrestrials using the cattle for experiments to help them adapt to the Earth’s environment, or using cattle to develop a food-based biological weapon for the invasion of Earth. Others thought secretive governmental or military agencies, spooky cults or perverse deviants were to blame.

US federal investigators have looked seriously into many claims and published thousands of pages refuting them. Spoilsport vets, sceptics and scientific experts dismiss the alien theory as nonsense and find that the animals died of natural causes, and that neither the government, the military, nor spooky cults had anything to do with the deaths, but deviants who derive pleasure or sexual stimulation from mutilating animals may have had a hand in some deaths.

Though there is a report of aliens mutilating a provincial New Zealander in 1994, the extraterrestrials seem to have left our farm stock unmolested.

So what is it about American animals? Or are Americans more credulous than the rest of the world?

Speaking at New Zealand’s first International UFO Symposium in Auckland, Stan Deyo explained that US farmers can profit from reporting alien cattle mutilations.

If the police write their report in the right way, the mutilations can be classed as vandalism and are covered by insurance. The extraterrestrial mutilators seem to respect police jurisdiction lines for, outside the insurance-covered states, they generally leave the cows alone.
