Mungiki sect burn 3 matatus in Nairobi
Suspected mungiki sect members on Saturday torched three matatus in what is believed to be a revenge attack against those who failed to remit protection fees.
The arsonists are said to have driven to the parking lot at Nairobi’s Koinange stage along racecourse road at 4 am, dousing the vehicles with petrol before setting them ablaze.
Central police OCPD Tito Kilonzi who visited the scene said they are investigating the probability of mungiki involvement in the incident.
Kilonzi termed the torching heinous adding that police have intensified their fight against the sect activities.
Matatu operators have usually complained of extortion by the sect members.
Last week matatu operators in Githunguri and Banana in Kiambu district paralyzed their operations citing harassment by members of the proscribed sect.
