Mungiki sect members kill Police officer
A massive manhunt is in progress within Banana and its environs as the search for three mungiki suspects who shot dead a police officer continues.
The officer was killed on Tuesday morning during a raid at a suspected mungiki hideout after two buses were torched overnight.
Two brothers are also recovering at Agha Khan Hospital after the fleeing thugs shot them. Police managed to gun down one suspect and recovered an AK 47 assault riffle.
The fracas started in the wee hours after suspected mungiki adherents razed down two buses in the town. Police from Karuri police station arrived shortly at the scene, and using sniffer dogs followed the suspects to their hide out.
But the search for the goons turned tragic when they opened fire killing one police officer.
In the confusion three suspects managed to escape in a nearby bush with bullet wounds.
As they were fleeing they also tried to carjack a motorist , shooting at his car when he defied their orders to stop.
The incident left two brothers critically injured. However police followed the thugs and managed to kill one of them and recovered an AK 47 riffle.
Meanwhile, Samuel Mbugua who was killed last week by members of the proscribed sect was buried on Tuesday at Thimbigwa village.
Banana town has been the centre of violence between mungiki and Matatu operators over claims of extortion by the sect members.
