Public transport operators protest against Mungiki toll
Public transport on the Kiambu-Nairobi route was paralysed yesterday as matatu operators demonstrated against extortion by Mungiki sect members.
The protest started after Mungiki members who had camped at points along the Kiambu road demanded Sh250 from every matatu.
Drivers on route 100 and 120 stopped ferrying passengers at 8am, paralysing transport to the city from Githunguri, Kiambu and other townships.
Moving slowly in a convoy of more than 200 vehicles, the drivers drove on both lanes of the road while hooting, thereby blocking other motorists.
Several passengers who were travelling from the city to Githunguri were flushed out from vehicles by rowdy touts in Kiambu Town.
During the demonstration, touts took advantage and harassed other road users as police officers watched.
The protesters later parked the vehicles outside the area district commissioner’s office where they held an impromptu meeting until 1.30 pm when normal service resumed.
In the meeting, it became clear that the operators had been remitting Sh100 daily for every matatu to the outlawed Mungiki and opted to protest only after members of the sect hiked the illegal charges.
The protesters said the group that terrorised them had bases in Mukuru and Mathare slums in Nairobi. They also accused some police officers of being associates of Mungiki followers.
Kiambu district police boss Amos Cheboi attended the meeting.
