TV Station, church discuss report that led to pastor’s suicide
Christian leaders and the management of KDKA-Channel 2 met today to discuss the practices used to investigate the personal life of a pastor who committed suicide.
The Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania said in a statement that they expressed concern to KDKA management about how the story focusing on Rev. Brent Dugan was ”developed and promoted, and about journalistic integrity.”
Dugan, pastor of Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, committed suicide by overdosing on aspirin and alcohol in a motel room on Nov. 3, a few days after KDKA began airing promos showing his face and saying it would reveal his illicit behavior.
The station canceled the broadcast when it found out Dugan was missing. It is unclear what illegal activity KDKA was to allege Dugan was involved in, and the pastor was never charged with any crimes.
KDKA expressed its condolences today over Dugan’s death, but said in a statement that it had informed church leaders ”that it will continue to vigorously investigate and report illegal and unethical conduct by individuals holding positions of authority in all types of organizations.”
