Brazilian couple charged with money smuggling
Two Brazilian nationals appeared in federal court Tuesday on money smuggling charges for bringing more than $50,000 into the country without declaring it, federal authorities said.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Estevam Hernandes-Filho, 52, and Sonia Haddad Moraes Hernandes, 48, Monday. They arrived at the Miami International Airport from Brazil with $56,467 in U.S. currency, but claimed to have $10,000, according to an affidavit.
Hernandes-Filho and Hernandes were both charged with failing to declare U.S. currency and bulk cash smuggling. The charges each carry a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.
They were each released Tuesday on a $100,000 bond. The names of their attorneys were not immediately known.
ICE agents are also cooperating with the Brazilian government’s money laundering investigation into the couple.
“ICE special agents are committed to working with law enforcement agencies, both domestically and abroad, to ensure that international borders are not barriers for criminals to hide behind,” ICE spokeswoman Barbara Gonzalez said in an e-mail.
