Mayoral candidate charged in church drug bust
A Toronto mayoral candidate and his wife are facing numerous charges after police raided the Toronto chapter of the Church of the Universe Wednesday night.
Peter Styrsky, 49, was has been charged with 34 offences, including multiple counts of trafficking marijuana, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, trafficking hashish and possession for the proceeds of crime.
His 44-year-old wife Susan faces 11 similar charges.
Police laid 205 drug-related charges against 23 people following the bust at the facility at 1905 Queen St. E., near Woodbine Avenue.
The month-long undercover investigation followed complaints from residents and businesses in the Beaches area that a drug operation was being run there.
Police allege the G13 Beaches Mission of God Assembly of the Church of the Universe sold membership cards to marijuana buyers and sold marijuana and smoking paraphernalia to members.
The place was used as a smoking lounge by the buyers, police said.
The bust yielded 4,500 grams of marijuana, 151 marijuana plants, hashish, and weed oil worth an estimated $290,000. Almost $6,500 cash was also seized.
One of the suspects found on the premises had a permit for medicinal marijuana, and police allege those arrested hid behind the permit as a way to sell a large amount of marijuana.
Eleven of the people arrested face trafficking-related charges, while the remaining 12 who were alleged buyers face possession charges.
