Nathalie Gettliffe sentenced to 16 months in jail
A woman who abducted her two children and took them to France in defiance of a court order has been sentenced to 16 months in jail.
A B.C. Supreme Court judge sentenced Nathalie Gettliffe-Grant today, saying the dual French and Canadian citizen had poisoned her children’s minds to the love of their father, Scott Grant.
On Friday Gettliffe-Grant, who has been in jail since she was arrested last year after returning to Vancouver to defend a doctoral thesis, tearfully apologized to the court, to her children, Maximilien and Josephine, and to Grant.
Since Gettliff-Grant has been in custody since her arrest, she is credited with having already served 10 months of her sentence, and will be held for another six months.
The sentencing ends a bizarre case in which Gettliffe-Grant protested her treatment in Canadian jails and put her name up for election of the French presidency. She also gave birth to a baby while in jail awaiting trial.
But the longer-term question is how Gettliffe-Grant will reconcile her actions with her children and her ex-divorced husband.
