From Donald Andoor in Calabar
No fewer than four persons have been killed in different parts of Calabar, Cross River State in the last one week by persons suspected to be cultists while 19 suspects were arrested by the police in connection with the killings.
Of those reportedly shot dead, THISDAY gathered one (names withheld) was a final-year student of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) who completed his final year examination a few hours before he was shot at an eatery on Ekpo Abasi Street in Calabar South.
Eye witness accounts said the final year student was accosted by people suspected to be cultists and was called out for a discussion where he was shot in the chest at a very close range.
Three other dead persons, THISDAY gathered, were killed at Parliamentary Village, Ita Agbo Street and Ibom Layout respectively. They were all believed to be students of UNICAL
Public relations officer of the university, Mr Joseph Ekpang, who confirmed that the four victims were students of UNICAL however said all of them were killed outside the campus.
(…)
It could not be ascertained whether the cultists were from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where 18 students were killed down by people suspected to be cultists about two months ago.
