Dozens of Ahmadiya homes, mosques wrecked in Kuningan, W. Java

KUNINGAN, West Java (JP): Dozens of houses and two mosques belonging to members of the Ahmadiya Islamic sect in the village of Manis Lor, Jalaksana district, were attacked and wrecked by an unidentified mob from Sunday night through early Monday morning.

Antara reported that 18 houses were damaged in the incident, following the issuance of a joint decree by local administrations on Nov. 3 banning the sect.

The acts of vandalism greatly upset Ahmadiyah members, and was not the first time that such a pogrom had occurred.

“Last Saturday till Sunday was the worst incident compared to the previous nights,” said Irfan, one of the victims, adding that the joint decree has made the situation in the village explosive.

Irfan said the violence had not only damaged Ahmadi homes, but also those of non-Ahmadi. As many as 42 homes and two mosques have been vandalized in recent weeks.

There was no confirmation about the incident from the Kuningan Police chief Senior Adjutant Commissioner Hasanudin.

The Ahmadiya movement was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in Qadian, India, in March 1889. It believes that Ahmad is Imam Mahdi (messianic leader), who claimed to be the next prophet after the Prophet Muhammad.
