Dutch imams continue to court controversy

There is renewed controversy about remarks made by imams in mosques in Amsterdam and The Hague. Several imams continue to use their sermons to condemn the West, democracy and the emancipation of women. Last June, there was consternation in the Dutch media following revelations that some radical imams were calling for the destruction of the enemies of Islam.
The Dutch public prosecutor eventually decided against taking legal action, because there was little chance of winning. However, the mayor of The Hague, Wim Deetman, has now asked the public prosecution department to reconsider whether the remarks being made by some imams constitute incitement to hatred and whether legal action should be taken.
