Televangelist criticised by Guyana’s Health Minister for claimed HIV/AIDS cure
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyana’s Health Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, has slammed the Ernest Angley Ministries for its claim of having a cure for the dreaded HIV/AIDS disease, which kills about 5 million worldwide annually.
International televangelist, Ernest Angley, arrived in Guyana on Friday in his personal Boeing 747 for a series of crusades but, before he could step on stage, Minister Ramsammy issued a stern waning that Angley was being involved in an obscene exploitation of people’s vulnerability.
“We are unaware of the existence, to date, of any cure anywhere in the world for the HIV infection, and there has been no scientific documentation of any cure for AIDS. Anyone who promotes the misrepresentation that there is a religious-based cure for HIV is involved in an obscene exploitation of people’s vulnerability,” Ramsammy said in a release.
In preparation for the crusades, radio and television advertisements state that the lame will walk, deaf hear, blind see, AIDS and other related death diseases cured.
Ramsammy noted that the HIV/AIDS claim could lead the innocent into believing that they could give up proven means of protection against the disease. He added that the advertisements stand the risk of throwing back achievements made in the treatment and care of persons living with HIV/AIDS in Guyana.
“There are many religious persons who are living with HIV, who go to church and pray for divine assistance. Many have had their lives improved through the work of hard-working health workers, who themselves, are blessed with knowledge and wisdom that come from their faith,” Ramsammy alluded.
Justifying his comments, Ramsammy stated that he does not want to become engaged in any debate about miracle healing, noting that people have choices and each of them will determine what they want to believe.
A spokesperson for the Ernest Angley Ministries told Caribbean Net News that they will not respond to the accusations, but those who have been healed will testify.
