Madonna show to go on, minus crucifixion scene

The show will go on in Utah for The Material Girl and her controversial televised concert performance, minus the scene featuring a mock crucifixion.

KSL Channel 5 said Friday it will broadcast pop singer Madonna’s “Confessions Tour” concert, which will air on NBC on Nov. 22, after the station learned the network will cut out the scene of her hanging from a glass-mirrored cross, wearing a crown of thorns.

“They’ve told us that the ‘Live to Tell’ song has been revised, meaning there won’t be any references to the crucifixion,” said KSL’s manager of programming and operations, Michelle Kettle. “With that stipulation, KSL will show the concert.”

Last month, the local NBC affiliate owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed concerns about the scene as have other affiliates around the country.

“This is clearly something that if the event occurs in that show it would – in my opinion – not be keeping within the [holiday] season and within community standards,” KSL General Manager Greg James said at the time.

An NBC spokeswoman was unavailable for comment Friday, but Kettle said she did not hear of other affiliates threatening to pull from the broadcast, though many complained about NBC considering to include the scene.

“I just know they got complaints from affiliates all over the country,” she said. “I know a lot of pressure was put on by other affiliates.”

Conservative media groups such as the Parents Television Council and American Family Association also applied pressure to the network, launching an e-mail campaign that resulted in 750,000 e-mails sent to NBC.
