Two medical doctors and brother of a member of Christian Praying Assembly (CPA) Lagos, late Miss Ann Uzoh yesterday said that the young lady died of severe burns.
Pastor of CPA, Emeka Ezeugo alias Rev. King is currently under trial for murder of late Miss Uzoh last July.
Testifying at a Lagos High Court presided over by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, Dr. Sunday Soyemi of the Department of Anatomy, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) said that the late Miss Uzoh died from severe burns as a result of loss of body fluid.
“I had a case of one Ann Uzoh King brought for autopsy on August 16. My findings revealed that there were burns all over her chest, abdomen, whole of the back, upper limbs, lower limbs including her thighs, head and face.
There was 65 per cent of burns and anybody with burns of over 50 per cent hardly survives the state,” noted Dr. Soyemi.
He said further that Ann’s body was all dressed with bandage, the eyes were skunked in which revealed severe dehydration, adding that it was a classical burn while his findings did not show strangulation.
Second to testify yesterday was the deceased’s younger brother, Ifeanyi Uzuh who told the court that he was informed by some members of CPA on July 24 at his office and on getting to the hospital, he saw his sister, burnt like a goat.
“I saw her and started crying. She held my hand and told me she was sorry. She told me to bring out my mobile phone which is a camera and take her picture which I did, but did not tell the police upon instruction from her that I should not tell or show the picture to anybody.
She told me with the pains she was having then, she didn’t know whether she would survive.”
According to him, Ann just packed out of their father’s house one day and saisd she was going for her National Youth Serviuce but we later found out she was living with Rev. King.
“I went there once and two men in black suit beat me up and threw me out like a piece of paper and since then I stopped going knowing that anytime she needs money, she will come to me.
“She normally came to see me with scars on her face, plasters and bandages and when I ask what was wrong, she will say she had an accident,” he recounted.
The third prosecution witness and a medical doctor with Faith City Hospital, Ajao Estate, Dr. Chukwemeka Okafor said he was the first doctor to treat Ann before her death.
“I was on duty that Saturday July 22 night, at the reception when I saw a jeep rushed in and packed inside the compound of the hospital.
“I saw a lady on the passenger’s side and I rushed there. She was just static and not moving and appeared with burn injuries all over her.
“I expected to hear from the driver, what led to the accident but he wasn’t talking so, I shifted my attention the lady.”
At this point, Lagos Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) who was leading Dr. Okafor in evidence asked him to look round the court if he could identify the driver who brought Ann to the hospital.
He did identifying Rev. King sitting in the dock as the man who drove Ann to the hospital.
“We started treating her immediately. The state I met her was that of severe burn injuries on her hair, face, chest, abdomen, upper limb, lower limb and in pains. Let me just say she was in a bad state.
“I perceived much stench of petrol on her and grease as well as palm oil was also visible on her body.
“Also the other individuals that accompanied her to the hospital were all smelling petrol.
“The degree of burns is 70 per cent surface area then she had second and third degree of deep burns which means all her tissues and probably veins were lost to the fire burns,” Dr. Okafor said.
The doctor further recalled that Ann spent a total of 11 days between July 22 and August 2 when she died in the hospital.
The hearing, however, was cut short when the defence counsel Mr. Mike Okoye cross-examined the witness, asking whether he made a statement to the police, which he confirmed. Okoye asked the prosecution counsel for the said statement but she couldn’t produce it, saying she was hearing for the first time that the doctor made a statement and that the police never forwarded the doctor’s statement to her.
In the circumstance, the trial judge adjourned till today (Friday) to enable the prosecution produce the statement to the defence counsel who insisted that he must see it.
