Drama as Rev Emeka King’s Murder Trial Begins
An attempted murder and murder trial, involving controversial Lagos clergyman, Emeka Ezeuko, alias Dr Reverend King, began yesterday before an Ikeja High Court, presided over by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, amidst tight security and some courtroom drama from both legal representatives and a prosecution witness in the fresh matter.
Hearing continues today.
From 9.55a.m. till 3.30p.m., the court in between three stand-downs, listened to a brief argument among defence counsels in the matter, between opposing counsel, and a lengthy moving testimony from one of the alleged burn victims of accused, Miss Vivian Ezeocha.
The court-room and immediate surroundings were filled to the brim with King’s acolytes, journalists, lawyers, stern-looking Policemen and curious onlookers who thronged the court to catch a glimpse of the accused General Overseer.
Heavily-armed security officials numbering over 60, including Federal Highway Patrol officers, Mobile Policemen, regular police, plain-clothesmen and bullet-proof-vest wearing security-men surrounded the trial court room (Court 40, Ikeja High Court), stopped and frisked any and all suspicious looking visitors and passersby at random, while proceedings went on.
King, General Overseer of the Isolo-based Christian Praying Assembly (CPA), who was formally arraigned on September 26, before Justice Oyewole, on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder, brought against him by officials of the Ministry of Justice, Lagos State, was brought in a three-vehicle Police convoy to the court premises amidst very tight security.
