Media buzz builds as Warren Jeffs hearing nears
ST. GEORGE — News agencies from across the nation have gathered in the parking lot of Washington County’s 5th District Court, awaiting the initial appearance hearing at 1 p.m. today for polygamist leader Warren Jeffs.
The self-proclaimed prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will participate in the hearing via closed circuit television from the Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane. The hearing is not expected to last long.
Jeffs was jailed at the facility Tuesday afternoon after being flown there by helicopter from the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas. Because of his loyal following, Washington County law enforcement took extreme security measures in the prisoner transfer.
Washington County Sheriff Kirk Smith announced yesterday that Las Vegas attorney Richard A. Wright told him he has been retained as counsel for Jeffs.
Jeffs faces charges in Utah and Arizona related to his alleged involvement in arranging marriages of underage girls to older men. He is being held in Utah without bail.
