Authorities searching for pastor charged with felony sodomy
The Newton County Sheriff’s Department is searching for a Newton County pastor who has been charged with eight counts of felony sodomy.
Sheriff Ken Copeland has issued an arrest warrant for George Johnston, 63, 1939 Hebron Road, Granby.
An official with the sheriff’s department said Johnston’s church broke off from the Grand Valley Independent Baptist Church. On Monday, church leaders with the Grand Valley Independent Baptist Church surrendered to authorities and plead not guilty to various sex charges.
An alleged victim came forward to the sheriff’s department detailing how Johnston allegedly abused her. Johnston is the pastor of the Grandview Valley Baptist Church, which is located northeast of East Newton High School.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Department has taken four children into protective custody. The children are of age 5, 9, 13 and 15. They are of both male and female gender.
The sheriff’s department is asking for anyone who knows the whereabouts of Johnston to call its office at 451-8300.
The department is also asking for any other alleged victims of Johnston or the church to come forward by calling its office at 451-8300.
