As usual parliamentarians had a lot to talk about when they gathered at a news-stand at the Yaba Bus-stop last week Thursday. Among the issues that came up for discussion was the story of one Emeka Ezeugo aka Reverend King who was reported as having bathed some members of his church with petrol and set them on fire leading to the death of one of them. Rev. King, the pastor of a Lagos-based church, the Christian Praying Assembly(CPA), has been in the news since the incident was first reported in the media.

“I have been saying that this our country Nigeria is a strange place but some people don’t believe me,” began a parliamentarian by name Alphonsus Okemiri. “It’s a country where all kinds of strange things happen everyday and we just look at it as normal. There’s no day you wake up from bed that you will not hear that something has happened that will make people begin to wonder.

“Look at this Pastor King matter for example. How can somebody who calls himself a pastor of a church burn his church members with fire? Which kind of wickedness is that? The most annoying part is that he said he did it because they committed fornication. Who gave him the power to judge and punish that way? Is he God? Nonsense!” he hissed in anger.

“The first time I saw that man’s picture I was not surprised that he can do a thing like that,” chipped in parliamentarian Oluwaseun Akanni. “When you look at his face well-well, you will know instantly that he can do anything. That face can make any small pikin to cry. In fact I don’t know how anybody will see that kind of man and still want to attend his church,” he said with a shrug.

For parliamentarian Sunny Ita: “There are many churches like that where the pastors will be treating their members anyhow. I heard that this Pastor King used to flog his church members. Imagine that kind of thing. Person will leave his house to go and hear the word of God only for one pastor to start flogging him like small pikin. I tell you church has turned into another thing in this country”.

Sunny’s comment drew instant reaction from a parliamentarian who gave his name as Wisdom Omatseye. “I swear if any pastor flogs me like that I will flog him back without wasting time. Where is it in the Bible that a pastor can flog anybody? The work of a pastor is to teach people the word of God and pray for them not to flog anybody. I don’t know why we human beings like to do what God did not send us to do. That is how one pastor was always baffing other men’s wives and admiring their naked bodies in the name of baptising them. He even slept with some of them before they caught him doing it. Some of these so-called pastors and men of God are just fake, pretending to be doing the work of God while the work they are actually doing is that of the devil,” he stated, scowling.

Alphonsus agreed with him. “That is true. There are lots of fake pastors in the Nigeria today. They capitalise on the fact that people are running to church with their problems to deceive many. And when you look at it again, it’s the poverty in this country that is making people to be running to such pastors. Assuming things are working very well it will not be possible for fake pastors to deceive anybody. In fact, it’s the yeye government we have in this country that is responsible for the problem,” he stated heatedly.

“Abeg, this is not government matter,” objected parliamentarian John Okhai. “Government has nothing to do with this one. It’s just a clear case of some greedy people who are using religion to defraud people. So, don’t blame government. If you want to blame anybody let it be those people who are fond of jumping from church to church looking for miracle. It’s while they’re doing this that they fall into the hand of these fake pastors. The question we should be asking ourselves is, why are Nigerians always looking for miracles? The simple answer is that many want to enjoy life without working for it.

“They believe that God is still in the business of raining manna from heaven. Unfortunately for them, that period has passed. God now wants us to work for our daily bread. But some people don’t know this. So, instead of struggling and working hard, they listen to fake pastors who promise them heaven on earth. And before you know it they will become slaves to these pastors who will then start treating them anyhow,” he posited with feeling.

Oluwaseun rejoined the debate at this stage. “I suspect that these fake pastors use jazz(charm) to deceive people. I don’t think they are doing what they’re doing with empty hand. Otherwise how can they be maltreating their members and nobody will complain. I’m sure that if not for the fact that he set fire on some of his members, nobody would have known what Reverend King has been doing to those that attend his church,” he alleged.

Contributing to this, Sunny had this to say: “The fact of the case is that many of these fake pastors are occult members. They use their occult powers to make people do whatever they like”. But John would not agree. “It’s a lie. It’s a case of greed versus greed; that is the greed of the fake pastors and the greed of the miracle seekers…”.

Sunny was interrupted by one Wilson Okpetu who queried heatedly thus: “And what is wrong in being a miracle seeker? God is a miracle worker and every real Christian knows this. So, don’t talk as if it’s bad thing to expect a miracle from God. In any case God uses his servants to perform miracles…”.

This sparked off another round of debate as the gathering of parliamentarians became sharply divided over who was right between the two men.
