French woman held in Canada kidnap case ‘to stand for president’

PARIS (AFP) – Nathalie Gettliffe, a pregnant Frenchwoman arrested in Canada and charged with kidnapping her own children, wants to stand in next year’s French presidential elections, it was reported.

Le Parisien newspaper reported that Gettliffe had asked the French consulate for an office and secretarial services to prepare her election campaign.

The French foreign ministry told AFP it had “taken note” of her intention to stand for president, refusing to comment further.

Pierre Giraud, the mayor of Satillieu in southeast France, said that Gettliffe had gathered at least a tenth of the 500 mayors’ signatures needed to validate her candidacy.

“If it’s the only way to get her out of there and to get the system moving, I will sign and others will sign with me.”

Gettliffe’s new partner, French journalist Francis Gruzelle, meanwhile said that 142 mayors had signed a petition in her support.

Gettliffe and her former Canadian husband, Scott Grant, have been fighting a bitter custody dispute over their two children, Maximilien, 12, and Josephine, 11, since Gettliffe moved with the children to France in 2001.

Now five months pregnant by her new partner, Gettliffe was arrested April 10 when she flew into Vancouver in western Canada to defend her doctoral thesis at the University of British Columbia.

She faces two charges related to child abduction under Canada’s criminal code, with a maximum jail sentence of 10 years. Her trial is set to start on October 16 and to last two weeks.

Several courts in both Canada and France have ruled that Gettliffe must return the children, who are now in France with Gruzelle.
