Attempted Murder: Emeka King Granted Bail, Re-Arrested
Controversial Lagos Pastor, Emeka Ezeugo, alias Dr Reverend King of the Christian Praying Assembly (CPA), was yesterday arraigned by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police before an Ebute-Metta Magistrate’s Court, on a four-count charge of attempted murder, felony, intent to cause grievous harm, and wounding of seven persons, described as members of his congregation.
The bearded clergy-man, who was arraigned alongside two other persons, Donatus Chaizor and Kelechi Chikere (said to be members of his Church), pleaded not guilty to all the counts and was granted bail in the sum of N2m with two sureties who must be land owners in Lagos.
However, minutes after the case was adjourned till Thursday, August 11, King, who sported a blue shirt and cardigan, was quickly re-arrested and whisked away by a police team back to Lagos State SCID, Panti, after it was allegedly discovered that one of the victims, Ann Uzoh King, died yesterday in a Lagos hospital.
King, in a two-page charge sheet with No. F/74/2006 brought before presiding Magistrate Teslim A. Elias, was said to have attempted to murder six people on July 22, at No 6B, Canal View, Ajao Estate, Lagos, by pouring petrol on them and setting them on fire.
The six persons include Olisa Chiejina, Onuorah Chizoba, Uche Chukwu Iwoba, Vivian Ezeocha, Bunmi Olisa, and Nwere Jessica.
Also, the accused pastor was alleged to have caused grievous harm on one Ann Uzoh King, when he allegedly poured a jerry-can full of petrol on her and set her on fire (which ultimately resulted in her death), thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 332 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
When the matter came up before Elias yesterday, King, who was brought to court in a Volkswagen ‘Fedeco’ bus amidst very tight security and represented by Chief Mike Okoye, had pleaded not guilty to all four counts brought against him and other two accused persons by Police prosecutor, Mr Ochogwu Ogbeh.
The matter was thereafter adjourned till August 11, while bail was set at N2million and two sureties for him; only for him to emerge from the court room and be re-arrested by the Police over the death of Ann Uzoh King, who was being treated for severe burns at a Lagos Hospital.
King, aged 40 years, was according to police sources, alleged to have set fire on above-mentioned teenage victims after he accused them of committing fornication.
In a twist to above incident however, one Ebele Obi, who claimed to be counsel to Rev. King, had accused some members of the CPA congregation of formenting trouble for the accused person; whom he described as a man with unique anointing and calling.
Obi, in a three-page statement made available to THISDAY yesterday, claimed the alleged disgruntled members (allegedly led by King’s own cousin) wanted to hijack the church’s fortune; while he disclaimed the burn incidents as false.
