Presure Mounts On Police To Release Emeka King
Members of Christian Praying Assembly (CPA) at Ajao Estate, Lagos yesterday made frantic effort to effect the release on bail of their General Overseer, Rev. Emeka King currently detained at State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.
This came even as the police finalised plans to charge the cleric to court soon.
King was arrested on Sunday night by detectives from SCID for allegedly setting six members of his church on fire, an allegation he (king) had denied.
He was still detained at SCID cell, Panti, as at press time.
Daily Champion, however, observed that worshippers trooped to SCID, yesterday afternoon to seek the release of their cleric, who they address as “god.”
A source told our correspondent that members of the church, particularly, lawyers and journalists among them had sought for the release of King based on self recognition, a request the deputy commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of SCID, Mr. Olayinka Balogun rejected as at press time.
Olayinka was said to have informed the “lobbyists” that King has over 15 cases against him before the police, insisting that thorough investigation would be conducted.
Speaking with Daily Champion a senior police officer, who pleaded anonymity and among the team currently investigating the matter said that King and his accomplice might be charged to court before the end of the week.
He said that immediately the investigation in the matter is concluded, the general overseer would be prosecuted.
The officer noted that investigations have to be thorough so as to fully prosecute the suspect.
Also speaking, state police spokesman, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni said: ” I cannot tell you the exact date we will charge him to court because investigations are still going on but once we conclude the investigation we will arraign him.”
Asked to comment on the charges that would be preferred against him, Ojajuni, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) said “it is only investigation that will reveal the nature of charge(s) that would be preferred against him, we are investigating the allegation and until, then I do not know the likely charges.”
King had admitted flogging his members as a way of punishing them for wrong doings but denied setting them ablaze.
He said the injuries sustained by the victims were caused by generating set.
