Cash for Aids cure preacher in court
The self-proclaimed “faith healer” Lucy Nduta Mwangi was yesterday charged with obtaining over Sh1.5 million from HIV/Aids patients by falsely pretending that she could cure them through prayer.
The self Styled Prophetess, who was clad in a white dress appeared before a Senior Principal Magistrate Mrs Rosemelle Mutoka and denied 12 counts preferred against her.
Nduta through her defence lawyers informed Mrs Mutoka that she will be opposing the charges terming them ‘mere fabrications’.
The suspect denied all the 12 counts filed against her. She is accused of obtaining a Toyota Hilux valued at Sh300,000 from Ms Catherine Gitui by allegedly claiming that she was in a position to heal her daughter.
Nduta who shot into fame through her faith healing ministry is further accused of receiving through alleged fraudulent tricks a total of Sh1,591,200 from Aid patients. She is also accused of receiving Sh21,000 from Anne Waiyira by falsely pretending that she would pray for her to secure a visa to travel to Netherlands.
Among other victims in her alleged prayer miracles is Mary Mumbi, who allegedly gave her Sh100,000 so as she could heal her Asthma disease.
She allegedly committed the offences between 2004-2006 at her Salvation Healing Ministry Church located in the city of Nairobi.
The defence lawyer told Mrs Mutoka that he would be raising a preliminary objection to challenge the validity of the charges.
The lawyer claimed the charges are mere fabrications and that they will first subject them to legal test before the trial of the “prophetess” takes off.
The lead lawyer a Mr Maina who was in court was indisposed. The Magistrate heard that he could not communicate. The lawyer was sitting in court when the new charges were being read to his client.
The prosecution is being led by Chief Inspector Muriithi Mate who said the case has been listed for hearing August 9. Insp Mate said the case is expected to be concluded in three days.
He informed the court that the case needed to be disposed off expeditiously. He informed the court that the witnesses are anxious to know the out come of the case. The accused was first arraigned before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Aggrey Muchelule and denied the charges filed against her.
