MADRID – The man who became known as the “Spanish Taliban” is planning to sue the American government for compensation.

Ahmed Abderrahaman, from Ceuta in the Spanish part of Morocco, was released from prison on Monday after a court overturned a verdict that he was guilty of belonging to Al Qaeda.

Abderrahman told a press conference he was very happy to be free again and wanted to live “like a normal person”. He intends to earn his living working as a lorry driver.

His lawyer said his 31-year-old client had never belonged to Al Qaeda but went to study religion at a Koran school and was arrested “fleeing the bombing in Afghanistan”.

He was arrested and transferred between several prison camps including the notorious Cuban camp Guantanamo.

“We slept in cages of two metres by one like they use for animals with a sheet, a blanket and a towel as our only utensils”, he said.

After more than two-and-a-half years, Abderrahman was extradited to Spain where he was sentenced to six years’ prison by the National Court in Madrid

The Supreme Court ruled that there was “a total absence of proof” to the charges.

Abderrahaman’s lawyer said he was considering a legal complaint to the National Court about its handling of the case and was planning to sue the US government for damages.
