Nairobi preacher Lucy Nduta was yesterday charged with six counts of obtaining money by pretending to be in a position to cure HIV/Aids patients through prayers.

Ms Nduta, who preaches at the Salvation Healing Ministry in Nairobi, will be held in custody until Monday when her application for bail will be heard.

Senior principal magistrate Margaret Muigai denied the accused bail after the prosecutor, Mr Simon Wabwire, opposed an application by the defendant’s lawyer.

She denied all the charges, which state that she induced people into giving her money and a car in the belief that they would be cured of Aids after prayers.

The first charge states that she used fraudulent tricks and induced one person to give her a car, valued at Sh300,000, by pretending she could heal the complainant’s daughter through prayers.

In the other counts, Ms Nduta is charged with obtaining cash through trickery and pretence.

She is accused of receiving money from five other people who paid her Sh700,000, Sh158,000, Sh120,000, Sh40,000 and Sh300,000.

Mr Wabwire asked the magistrate to keep the accused in custody to allow police to collect statements from more people who were coming out to complain that they had paid money to Ms Nduta under similar circumstances.

“As we speak inside the courtroom, there are people recording statements at the Central Police Station,” he said.

Supporters of the accused who were wearing white printed T-shirts were in court and later left carrying placards with messages about their church.

The case is fixed for hearing from August 2 to 4.
