New sexual abuse accusations leveled against Trevi in Mexico City

Mexico City, Dec 04, 2002 (EFE via COMTEX) — New accusations have been leveled against disgraced Mexican pop diva Gloria Trevi, whose extradition from Brazil is expected to go through in the next few days, officials reported Wednesday.
Mexico City Attorney General Bernardo Batiz told reporters that several young women who were part of the so-called “Trevi Clan” came forward to accuse Trevi and her manager Sergio Andrade of kidnapping and sexual abuse.
Batiz said these accusations “are not included in the extradition request” made to Brazilian authorities, which is why when Trevi arrives in Mexico she will have to face the charges of kidnapping and sexually abusing minors in the northern state of Chihuahua.
Trevi, 32, Andrade and back-up singer Maria Raquenel Portillo, a.k.a. “Mary Boquitas,” were arrested in January 2000 in Rio de Janeiro, where they were living as fugitives after a Chihuahua judge charged them with multiple counts of sexual abuse involving minors.
The trio stands accused of luring young girls into a cult-like web of sexual abuse with the promise of pop stardom in a saga that reached epic proportions.
The Brazilian Supreme Court approved the trio’s extradition to Mexico in December 2000, but the procedure was foiled by the countless appeals filed by Trevi’s defense team and the claims the singer was raped by federal guards at the Brasilia jail after she became pregnant and refused to name the baby’s father.
Trevi’s refusal to identify the father led to a police investigation that concluded the singer had used a pen to artificially inseminate herself with a mixture of semen from Andrade and a notorious Brazilian bank robber smuggled to her cell in a glass of milk.
After the Brazilian press openly ridiculed the police report, the Supreme Court ordered Trevi’s afterbirth kept frozen as evidence in order to conduct a paternity test.
Trevi gave birth to Angel Gabriel Trevi[o in February, but still refused to identify his father, so the court ordered DNA samples taken from some 70 policemen and prisoners to determine the baby’s paternity.
If the baby’s father proved to be Brazilian, Trevi’s lawyers would have more ammunition to fight her extradition.
The tests found Andrade was the baby’s biological father, but Trevi’s defense team claims the results were rigged.
Earlier this year, Trevi and her baby were briefly transferred to a convent on the outskirts of Brasilia to await extradition, then taken back to jail after criticism from Mexico.
This was followed by press reports claiming the singer had caught the eye of a Brazilian diplomat, who was considering marrying Trevi, raising a whole new slew of questions about how this would affect her extradition.
Last week, Trevi sent a letter to the Brazilian Supreme Court giving up her lengthy extradition battle.
Brazilian Attorney General Geraldo Brindeiro approved Trevi’s extradition Tuesday and authorized her transfer to Mexico, however Mexican Foreign Ministry officials said they have not received any notification of the singer’s return from Brazil’s Supreme Court.
