Mungiki coordinator held in police swoop
The Eldoret coordinator of the outlawed Mungiki sect has been arrested and electronic goods suspected to have been stolen recovered.
Police confirmed the arrest of the coordinator, Benson Mwai Chege, who hails from Muranga district. Acting police boss Apollo Onyonyi said 14 other suspected members of the sect were being held at the station and were helping the police with investigations.
Onyonyi said all the14 suspects in custody have six star-shaped marks, associated with the Mungiki sect, on their bodies.
” Among the suspects we have is a woman, who also has the marks. We have come to a conclusion that this group belongs to Mungiki,” he said.
Onyonyi said Chege was arrested in his house in the sprawling Langas slums, where three television sets, three DVDs, a camera and four wall clocks were recovered.
He said the suspected Mungiki coordinator was recruited into the sect last year and posted to Eldoret as the leader of the group in the region.
“He receives money on behalf of members and organises meetings with officials from outside the town,” said Onyonyi.
There was drama when a huge snake emerged from the sect’s shrine in Kipkaren farm after it was demolished by police officers. Some members of the public and officers took to their heels as the hissing snake looked for an escape route, before it was killed.
