BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of California-Irvine psychologist and renowned expert in memory and eyewitness testimony, Professor Elizabeth F. Loftus, Ph.D., will receive the 2006 Ireland Distinguished Visiting Scholar Prize from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

Loftus will present a lecture, “Illusions of Memory,” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at the Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Avenue South. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Loftus studies memory and how a person’s memory can be changed by what they are told. She has been an expert witness and consultant on a number of high-profile cases, including the Michael Jackson case, the Ted Bundy case and the O.J. Simpson trial. In addition, she has worked on numerous court cases involving allegations of sexual abuse based on memories recovered in therapy.

Her numerous publications include the book “Eyewitness Testimony.” She also has co-authored several books, which include “The Myth of Repressed Memory” and “Witness for the Defense: The Accused, the Eyewitness and the Expert Who Puts Memory on Trial.”

Loftus earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from Stanford University in 1967 and 1970 respectively. She joined the University of California-Irvine’s School of Social Ecology in 2002 as a Distinguished Professor.

As the UAB Ireland Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Loftus also will visit the UAB campus to meet with students and faculty. The Ireland Award brings internationally renowned scholars in the arts and sciences to UAB to present a public lecture, attend a dinner in their honor and participate in campus activities. The prize is made possible through an endowment established by Caroline F. and Charles W. Ireland.
