Lots of C.S. Lewis
Disney’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, in theaters since the holiday season and out on DVD this week, has spawned several new and recent DVDs about all things Narnia:
• C.S. Lewis: Beyond Narnia (Gaiam, $15). This touching Hallmark Channel special from last year dramatizes the life Lewis and the influences that led him to write the Narnia books. Extras include trivia, bibliography and recipe for Turkish Delight (the treat that the White Witch gives to Edmund).
• The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Image Entertain-ment, $20). A newly remastered version of the modest Emmy-nominated 1988 BBC TV adaptation, now with surround sound. Also planned are remastered versions of BBC adaptations of other Narnia books Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair (currently available in two-channel sound with Wardrobe in a $50 three-disc box set.) Extras: trivia, a short video history of Lewis and, again, a recipe for Turkish Delight.
• C.S. Lewis & The Chronicles of Narnia (Delta Entertainment, $10). BBC producer Liam Dale narrates this run-of-the-mill documentary on the Narnia author’s life and his Narnia legacy.
• Chronicling Narnia (Artsmagic, $25). U.K. children’s book critic Nicholas Tucker and author Diana Wynne Jones (Howl’s Moving Castle) assess Lewis’ life and writings in this documentary. Extras include an interview with Empire Magazine’s Dan Jolin and an interactive map of Narnia.
• The Question of God: Sigmund Freud & C.S. Lewis (PBS Home Video, $25). In this 2004 thought provoking four-hour miniseries, Harvard Medical School psychiatrist Armand M. Nicholi referees a debate on the teachings of Freud and Lewis and how their teachings affect our beliefs. Extras: printable discussion guide for teachers.
• C.S. Lewis Through the Shadowlands (Vision Video, $20) An award-winning 1985 BBC movie about Lewis’ late life marriage to Joy Gresham and her death from cancer. (Also chronicled in the 1993 film Shadowlands starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.)
