Kenyan Police Arrest Over 900 Outlawed Sect Members in Central District
The government says more than 970 members of the outlawed Mungiki sect have been arrested in Murang’a District [central Kenya] and charged in court as the crackdown continues in the district.
Murang’a District Commissioner [DC] Kenneth Lusaka maintained that the government will not rest until all activities of the sect are brought to an end, and its members arrested. The DC denied allegations that police were harassing innocent people while conducting operations to flush out members of the sect.
Kiharu Member of Parliament Kembi Gitura challenged the National Commission on Human Rights chairman Maina Kiai to visit the area and verify his allegations that police were harassing innocent wananchi [citizens].
The leaders were speaking at Kahuro market during a security meeting.
