Women appear in court on unlawful midwifery charges
BRADENTON – Two women charged with practicing midwifery without a license appeared in court Friday for a hearing.
Linda McGlade, 54, and her daughter-in-law, Tanya McGlade, 26, told police they helped Mara McGlade, another family member, deliver a baby boy at home Dec. 8, 2004, according to police reports. Mara McGlade died two days later due to “hemorrhagic shock complicating delivery of intrauterine pregnancy.”
Mara McGlade was Linda McGlade’s daughter-in-law.
Richard Buckle, attorney for Linda and Tanya McGlade, asked the judge to disallow use of the words “religious cult” during trial, based on how it might taint a jury’s views about the case.
Circuit Judge Edward Nicholas declined to make a ruling, saying he needed more information on the case.
Buckle also filed a motion to block a jury from hearing how Mara McGlade died, and to bar her family from the trial. Nicholas denied both motions.
“The alleged complications Mara McGlade suffered before her death is relevant and appropriate on charge of practising midwifery without a license,” Nicholas said.
Nicholas said he will allow Mara McGlade’s family in the courtroom, and instruct them to behave.
The next hearing for the McGlades is scheduled for March 7.
