Mungiki sect leader Maina Njenga has been arrested.

Njenga was nabbed alongside 10 other suspects, including 5 women in a dawn raid at his home in Ngong.

During the operation, police stumbled on Sh400,000 stashed in a vehicle owned by the leader of the outlawed sect.

More than 100 police officers led by Nairobi head of operations Julius Ndegwa, and Nairobi CID chief Sammy Githui, made the arrests.

Police also say they’ve recovered a pistol, 4 pangas and other crude weapons from the 6-bedroomed house.

The raid that started at about 5am is still in progress.

The sting follows the launch of a crackdown on the sect by police announced last month, by Internal Security Minister John Michuki and police commissioner Hussein Ali.

Police have in the meantime barred Njenga’s lawyer Oyoo Oyiero from seeing him.

Officers at the scene say they need time to complete their search in the house.
