Police declare all-out war on the Mungiki sect
The police department has now declared an all-out war on the Mungiki sect, hours after two senior police officers and a constable were shot and wounded by members of the sect in skirmishes in downtown Nairobi.
The battle cry was sounded by Police Commissioner Major General Hussein Ali after his officers were shot at, as they barred matatu crews who operate on Juja road from demonstrating into the city center.
“Any person who is prepared to attack a police officer is a vicious and dangerous criminal and must be prepared for the consequences,” he said adding: “They can run and hide but we’ll get them.”
Those injured are the officer in charge of operations in Nairobi Julius Ndegwa who suffered a gunshot wound on his face, the commander of the central police station Patrick Oduma who was hit on the chest. He was saved by his bullet proof jacket.
The third officer was not as lucky, after a bullet shattered his leg.
Ali says he no effort will be spared in hunting down the sect’s members regardless of the forces behind them.
“It doesn’t matter to me who their financiers, friends, allies or sympathizers may be. The law is not selective to rich people or people that hold high office in government.”
Ali says they still have a warrant for the arrest of the sect leader Maina Njenga who went into hiding late last year.
