Feds file suit to block alleged tax-fraud scheme
ATLANTA - The U.S. Justice Department is suing an Atlanta man accused of promoting an alleged tax-fraud scheme involving the Yamassee Native Americans of the Creek Nation in Eatonton, according to a news release from the justice department. The Yamassee group is formerly known as the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors.
The government filed a complaint against Derrick Sanders on Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District in Atlanta, the release stated.
Sanders, who says he’s the grand master consul of the Yamassee, is accused of helping people file paperwork with their employers stating the workers are not subject to federal taxes as American Indians, the release stated.
The complaint states the government has not recognized the Yamassee group as American Indians, and reiterates that all U.S. citizens, including American Indians, are subject to federal income taxes, the release stated.
Members of the Yamassee have also claimed they are exempt from state laws and can issue their own driver’s licenses.
