OSAKA — Three Aum Shinrikyo cult members have filed a damages lawsuit against the Suita city government in Osaka Prefecture for rejecting their applications for residency registration last month, city officials said Tuesday.

The three lodged the lawsuit with the Osaka District Court, demanding a total of 3 million yen in compensation and revocation of the city’s decision on Oct 25 to deny their applications for residency registration, the officials said.

According to the officials, the city government has so far prevented 11 Aum members from registering as residents.

Earlier, Aum members filed a lawsuit twice against the city government for similar reasons.

In June, the Osaka High Court turned down the city government’s appeal of a lower court ruling that the western Japan city compensate two Aum members for rejecting their applications for residency registration.

On the second lawsuit, the Osaka District Court also ruled Nov 7 that the city revoke its earlier decision not to accept two Aum members’ applications.

Some local governments in Japan have refused to allow members of the cult, responsible for the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system that killed 12 people and injured thousands and other crimes, to register as residents.

Aum now calls itself Aleph.
