Excerpt from report attributed to Antara, carried by Indonesian newspaper Suara Merdeka website on 20 July
Jakarta: The minister for religious affairs, M. Maftuh Basyuni, has stated that the government has banned the dissemination of Ahmadiyah teachings in Indonesia because they are regarded as being deviant.
“The fatwa [issued by the Indonesian Ulamas Council in 1980] states that their teachings are deviant… [ellipsis as received] oh yes, we maintain the ban,” Maftuh said following a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Tuesday (19 July). However, the minister said that the Department of Religion did not need to issue a new ruling on the prohibition on Ahmadiyah. [passage omitted]
On 20 September 1984, the department issued a circular addressed to its regional offices throughout Indonesia, specifically to the heads of the Islam divisions, which said that the Ahmadiyah sects were deviant because they believe that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was a prophet. [passage omitted]
The Department of Religion also prohibited Ahmadiyah followers in Indonesia from disseminating their ideas. [passage omitted]
For those who were already followers of the Qadani stream of Ahmadiyah, the Department called on them to return to the true teachings of Islam [passage omitted: irrelevant].
[Republika reported on 19 July 2005 that recommendations on Ahmadiyah's status, made by a special team within the Attorney- General's Office dealing with religious sects, had been conveyed directly to the president and it would require a presidential decree to shut the sect down.]
